Help our Better Rates for Pubs campaign

The Better Rates for Pubs campaign aims to ease the burden of business rates for pubs. The campaign is jointly supported by leading organisations in the beer and pub sector; the BBPA, CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale), FLVA Federation of Licensed Victuallers Associations), BFBI (Brewing Food & Beverages Suppliers Association) and BISL (Business in Sport and Leisure).

Key objectives
*To extend small business rate relief to the end of the current Parliament (and beyond), with an immediate saving for pubs of £27 million
*To allow greater flexibility for pubs to apply for a review of the level of business rates following a material change in turnover
*To promote the wider use of rural rate relief by pubs and local authorities

The Campaign so far
Early Day Motion 599
The campaign has growing support among MPs. A new Early Day motion (EDM 599) tabled by Charlotte Leslie MP calls for MPs to support the campaign’s three key objectives(see Westminster Round Up)

The BBPA and campaign supporters have also written to the Chancellor George Osborne, urging him to implement the campaign’s key objectives.

Contact your local MP
A template letter (template A) for you to send to your local MPs calling on them to support EDM 599 which highlights the industry campaign and will signify their support is available to view below. In relation to our call for an extension of SBRR, prompt action in the run up the Autumn Statement on 4th December will greatly assist the campaign

Ask your publicans to get involved
The BBPA is working with the Publican’s Morning Advertiser to encourage publicans to contact their local MP on the Better rates for Pubs campaign. Template B can be sent to publicans, contacts and staff asking for their help, and is available to view below.

Publicise the industry call in your local media
The BBPA will soon be providing business rates data on a local authority, county and regional basis that can be released to your local media. We will also be providing a template news release.

TEMPLATE LETTER TO MPs - FROM PUBLICANS

XXXX MP
House of Commons

Dear XXXX,

Better rates for pubs – beating the Business Rates burden – EDM 599

As I run a pub in your constituency, I want to share my concerns about the impact of business rates, and ask for you support for their reform.

Business Rates now represent an increasing challenge to the long term prospects of pubs, both in this constituency and across the country.

In response, a wide range of representative bodies in the brewing and pub industry has united to call for ‘Better Rates for Pubs’. The campaign is backed by the British Beer & Pub Association, Campaign for Real Ale, Federation of Licensed Victuallers Associations, Brewing, Food & Beverage Suppliers Association (BFBI) and Business in Sport & Leisure.

The campaign calls for an extension of small business rate relief (SBRR) for pubs beyond April 2014, greater take-up of rural rate relief for pubs and a review of the revaluation process for pub business rates to ensure that valuations accurately reflect a pub's turnover.

As a publican, I believe these measures would result in a huge improvement in the business rates system for pubs. As pubs play such an important role in your constituency, I am asking you to support this campaign by signing EDM 599 on Community Pubs which highlights the campaign’s objectives. I would also urge you to write to the Chancellor indicating your support for an extension to Small Business Rate Relief in the Autumn Statement.

Yours sincerely,
