Charles Wells

The Charles Wells name is synonymous with high quality brewing and great pubs, and has been ever since we were founded in 1876.

With almost 150 years of brewing expertise we have grown from a small family business into the UK’s largest independent brewery, with an award winning portfolio of pubs and beers enjoyed by millions of people all over the world. However, we still take great pride in our heritage and still promote the same values as our founder Charles Wells, putting a focus on quality and innovation and keeping our customers at the heart of everything we do. Although the company continues to grow, we still remain a family business with the Wells family firmly at the helm.

Our brewing division was renamed Wells and Young’s in 2006 following a joint venture with Young’s brewery, and just five years later Charles Wells acquired full ownership of the business. Since then we have developed an impressive portfolio of distinctive beers including Bombardier, Charlie Wells Dry Hopped Lager, Young’s London Stout, DNA, and Courage Directors, which are all produced at our brewery in the heart of Bedfordshire. We also brew premium lager Kirin Ichiban using the intricate Ichiban Shibori brewing process, and import Estrella Damm, ‘the beer of Barcelona’, which is now the fastest growing premium lager in the UK. Most recently, we acquired the McEwan’s and Younger’s brands.

Following a full rebrand in early 2015, we’ve gone back to our roots and now trade as Charles Wells once again, reuniting the different arms of the business under our founding name.

Only the very best ingredients go into our famous beers; we use farm assured barley, hand selected hops and our very own accredited natural mineral water from a well which was sunk by our founder more than 100 years ago. Alongside our reputation for great quality, distinctive beers in the UK, we also distribute our beers to more than 40 countries all over the world, with export sales now a key focus for the business.

It’s not just great beers we are famous for; we also have a wine division called Cockburn & Campbell and an estate of more than 200 great British pubs across the UK. We pride ourselves on the individuality of our sites; each of our licensees is different, so each and every Charles Wells pub you visit will offer a truly unique pub experience - but one thing you will always find is a warm welcome and a great pint of beer!

We are also taking the great British pub experience across the channel and have an expanding pub estate in France, with pubs in Paris, Toulouse, Montpellier, Bordeaux and Lyon through Charles Wells France.
