Brigid Simmonds flies the flag for pubs at English Tourism Week launch in Cumbria

Speaking at an event today to mark the launch of English Tourism Week in Cumbria, Brigid Simmonds, BBPA Chief Executive, said:

“I am delighted to be here in Appleby, in Eden and of course in a pub to launch English Tourism Week.

“In the past six years as CEO of the British Beer & Pub Association I have been very keen for pubs to be seen as part of hospitality and tourism.

“According to Visit Britain, pubs are third on the list of things to visit for overseas visitors to the UK and four out of ten visit a pub at some time during their stay.

“There are 48,000 pubs in the UK, and in Cumbria, many are vital for tourism.

“We now serve one billion meals a year in pubs and we have some 40,000 rooms. I have stayed in many wonderful pubs and some of the best meals I have had ever have been in a pub.

“Beer and Pubs are economically hugely important to the UK economy. We contribute some £21 billion to GDP and employ over 900,000. In pubs 46 per cent of those employed are under the age of 25 and 53% per cent are women.”
