England fans set to enjoy 8 million extra pints this Sunday

Footie fans are set to enjoy an extra eight million pints of beer as the nation cheers on the England team on Sunday, according to the British Beer & Pub Association.
The leading voice for British brewers and pubs is predicting an extra five million pints of beer sold in the pub, and another three million at home this Sunday. This amounts to a £15 million boost in trade for Britain’s pubs on beer alone, with sales of pub food and other products up, too.
Apart from the weather, there is just one other damper on the festivities - the huge rates of beer tax paid by British fans. At 55 pence per pint, tax on beer is far higher in Britain than any other Euro 2012 country.  In Italy, tax per pint is just 14 pence. The BBPA has just produced a campaign cartoon highlighting the issue, and is urging all fans to sign an e-petition calling for an end to beer tax hikes, which already has the support of 59,000.
Brigid Simmonds, Chief Executive of the British Beer & Pub Association comments.
“When it comes to watching football, the pub is the perfect place to savour the big match atmosphere - with a beer of course.  Good luck England, and here’s to a great day for the nation's pubs.'
