Launch of UK food and drink export strategy

06/10/13

The UK brewing industry has supported the launch of the UK's food and drink export strategy this weekend at a reception in Cologne. The strategy was launched by Owen Paterson MP, Secretary of State at DEFRA.

The launch event coincided with Anuga, the world's largest food and drink exhibition, hosted in the German city of Cologne this weekend.

Beer has been identified as a key focus area within the strategy and the event will feature the unveiling of UKTI’s newly-designed 'Heritage is GREAT' posters, featuring iconic British beers, developed in partnership with the BBPA. The beers served at the event (Marston’s Pedigree; Theakston’s Old Peculier and Fuller’s London Pride)included those featured in the campaign posters. In addition, other smaller British brewers also showcased their beers at the even - making this a great day for British beer abroad.

Brigid Simmonds attended the launch on behalf of the British brewing industry (see picture). The BBPA is currently working with DEFRA and industry partners to develop a supporting plan to deliver the Government strategy – the Beer & Cider Action Plan. The plan will outline objectives and measures aimed at delivering sustainable growth to the British beer and brewing industry supply chain by bringing together the whole value chain, in partnership with government, to grow exports and reduce trade barriers.

BBPA Chief Executive, Brigid Simmonds said:

‘We welcome the launch of the food and drink export strategy and will support the planned initiatives in their goal to expand the export market.

'The beer export market had a £570m value in 2012 and exports are up 41 per cent to non-EU countries since 2008. Government and industry must continue to work together to ensure that enterprise in this area is well supported.’

Notes to editors:

  • The value of beer exports to the UK economy increased from under £100 million in 1990 to over £500 million in 2012.
  • Since 1990 the UK has more than quadrupled its beer exports, from nearly 1,500 hectolitres in 1990 to 6,500 in 2012.
