MP nominations for Pub Chef of the Year Award pass 100 mark

02/12/15

The British Beer & Pub Association and the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group are delighted to announce that they have received over 100 nominations from local MPs for the new Pub Chef of the Year Award, which was launched in partnership with Nestlé Professional earlier this year.

The 100th entry was received from Congleton MP Fiona Bruce, who nominated pub chefs Sam Smith and Martin Williams from The Rising Sun Country Pub & Dining in Scholar Green Village, Congleton.
Sam comments: “We feel very proud to be nominated for the Pub Chef of the Year award! It's nice to get recognition for all the hard work and passion that we put into our food every day and it’s especially great to have been nominated by our local MP.”

The entries received so far will be judged by a panel of industry experts including the acclaimed TV guest chef presenter and former Michelin Star holder, Paul Merrett. Six finalists will proceed to a cook off event in London in January. The winner will be crowned on 23rd February during an award ceremony held at the House of Commons.

Brigid Simmonds, Chief Executive of the British Beer & Pub Association, said: “We are delighted that so many Members of Parliament have engaged with the Pub Chef of the Year competition. It is testament to the quality of pub food today that so many chefs from all corners of the country have been put forward for this new award. I am looking forward to the next stage of the competition and ultimately to trying some of the excellent food on offer.”

Pubs serve almost a billion meals a year, with more and more pubs recognising that great food will attract more customers. Pubs are also vital to the local economy in every part of the country, offering valuable and flexible employment. With a national shortage of pub chefs, earlier this year the BBPA, in conjunction with the British Institute of Innkeeping (BII) launched the Pub Chef Passion initiative, aimed at promoting the pub chef as a career option. This award seeks to build on that work, and encourage young chefs towards a career in the pub trade.
