New £1 coin – BBPA urges licensees to prepare for coin’s launch

22/03/17

With just one week to go until The Royal Mint launches the new, 12-sided £1 coin, the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) is urging licensees to prepare for the new coin.

The BBPA says that owing to the new coin’s shape, licensees should check on back-office equipment, such as coin-counters, as they may need updating or replacing. Licensees should also make sure staff are aware that the new coin will be coming over the counter from Tuesday, 28th March.

The BBPA is also urging licensees to check with their suppliers regarding other equipment, such as pool tables and jukeboxes, to ensure they are ready for the new coin.

Through discussions with members, the Association is confident that machine manufacturers are well prepared for change, and that the new £1 coin won’t cause disruption for pub amusement machines.

Licensees should also be aware that the current £1 coin will cease to be in circulation from 16th October 2017, says the BBPA. From this date, licensees should not distribute the old coin, and will be under no obligation to accept the coin from customers.

Having engaged with The Royal Mint’s Business Communications Campaign since its launch in October, The BBPA has been spreading the campaign’s message through its members and social media channels, directing licensees to ‘www.thenewpoundcoin.com’ for additional information and tips on preparation.

Brigid Simmonds, Chief Executive, BBPA, comments:

“We have engaged with the Royal Mint’s campaign since its launch last October, and are taking this final opportunity to remind licensees that they should be aware the new coin is coming.

“The new £1 coin has been designed with several features to make it harder to counterfeit, and licensees should check their equipment to make sure they are well prepared for the change.”
