Olympic Torch Relay – visit a pub along the way! - 370 pubs in communities on route in Cornwall, and thousands more across the UK

17/05/12

As the Olympic Torch Relay reaches Britain’s shores in Cornwall tomorrow, the British Beer & Pub Association says the celebration promises to be a great opportunity for Britain’s pubs. The BBPA released figures showing that there are an astonishing 370 pubs in towns along the Cornish part of the torch route, with many thousands more, as the torch makes its way across Britain towards its momentous date with destiny.

The Torch Relay and the Olympics make for a vital opportunity – and a huge celebration - for pubs. New research published last week by Visit Britain shows that over 50 per cent of visitors to the UK will visit a pub. While pubs provide great hospitality for visitors at any time, they are also one of the very best places to enjoy sport with friends - it’s the next best thing to being in the Olympic Stadium, and a great place to cheer on the British team. Every one of Britain’s athletes is from a local community somewhere, and the pub is the best possible place to join together to cheer them on.

Brigid Simmonds, BBPA Chief Executive, comments:

“As the torch relay progresses, I hope people will celebrate what is one of the most exciting and unique events in modern times, by visiting a pub on route. Pubs will be a great place to enjoy the Olympics. And the torch route covers the entire country, with thousands of great pubs, with great hospitality at every stage.”

Notes to editors:

The British Beer & Pub Association is the UK’s leading organisation representing the brewing and pub sector. Its members account for 96 per cent of the beer brewed in the UK and around half of Britain’s 51,000 pubs.
