Responsibility Deal – 90 per cent of UK beer market signed up to pledges

Beer producers accounting for over 90 per cent of UK beer sales have today signed up to the commitments in the Government’s new ‘Responsibility Deal’, says the British Beer & Pub Association. The BBPA has itself signed up at industry level to all of the alcohol deal’s pledges and its core commitment of fostering responsible drinking.

As part of the Deal, the Association will also spearhead much more visible alcohol unit information in Britain’s pubs, to raise public awareness on the issue.

BBPA members already contribute over half of the funding for Drinkaware each year, to raise awareness about responsible drinking, have a good record on alcohol unit labelling, and are committed to community partnerships in the sector. The industry also funds the £100 million Campaign for Smarter Drinking, a high-profile initiative using posters, beermats and advertising at the point of sale to encourage a more responsible approach to alcohol amongst consumers.

The BBPA also says that part of the approach to encouraging responsible drinking should involve encouraging consumers to switch to lower-strength drinks such as beer - and that the Government could use next week’s Budget to send a signal to consumers, by freezing Beer Tax.

BBPA Chief Executive, Brigid Simmonds comments:

“Brewers and pubs have played a constructive role in this process and have signed-up to some significant changes in their operational and marketing practices that we hope will deliver real change. At the BBPA, we look forward to rolling our unit awareness campaign in pubs, as part of these commitments.

“Long-term change in our attitude to alcohol cannot be achieved simply through top-down regulation. Only by working together can we change the drinking culture in the UK. That is why the BBPA’s membership has come to the table in such a constructive manner to ensure realistic steps are taken to benefit all of society.”
