South West MPs support beer and pubs in reception in Parliament

The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) last night held an inaugural South West and Wessex Parliamentary reception, hosted by Simon Hoare MP (North Dorset), giving some 20 MPs from the region the opportunity to hear about the rich tradition of brewing in the area, and sample many of the area’s famous beers.

Simon Hoare MP highlighted the huge contribution of the industry to the economy, and Matt Kearsey of Hall & Woodhouse, Chairman of BBPA London & South outlined some of the challenges facing the sector, whilst highlighting the investment Hall & Woodhouse and others are making throughout the South West.

Andrew Griffiths, MP for Burton and Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group and Brigid Simmonds, drew attention to the #cutbeertax campaign, and urged MPs to lobby the Chancellor, or sign Early Day Motion 919, calling for a further cut in beer duty in the Budget next week.

Guests enjoyed a selection of the region’s wonderful beers including two casks of Hall & Woodhouse's famous Badger beers, and a wide array of bottled beers, including Ringwood Brewery’s Boondoggle, Arkell’s Wiltshire Gold, Palmers Dorset Gold and St Austell’s Tribute.

BBPA Chief Executive Brigid Simmonds comments:

“We were delighted to see so much support from MPs for beer and pubs in the South West and Wessex. I hope the importance of the industry is recognised, with a further cut in beer duty in the Budget next week.”
