Sports sponsorship – BBPA comments on Andy Burnham speech

15/01/15

Commenting on the sports sponsorship proposals in Andy Burnham’s speech on public health today, BBPA Chief Executive Brigid Simmonds said:

“If Labour rightly wants more people to get active, why pursue policies that would undermine sports sponsorship? Around £300 million comes from alcohol sponsorship, with some £50 million going directly to grassroots sport. Carried out responsibly, alcohol sponsorship benefits sport, both nationally and locally.”

Notes to editors:

The Perfect Match, a BBPA briefing setting out how alcohol sponsorship brings investment to UK sport, is available on the BBPA website here.
The British Beer & Pub Association is the leading body representing Britain’s brewers and pub companies. The Association is more than a century old and was originally founded as the Brewers’ Society in 1904. Our members account for some 90 per cent of beer brewed in Britain today, and own around 20,000 of the nation’s pubs.
