Statistician job with British Beer & Pub Assocation

The British Beer & Pub Association, the leading trade association representing the interests of the brewing and pub sectors, is seeking a Statistician to work in the Policy team. Based in our head office in the City of London you will be responsible for statistical analysis to underpin policy development and regular and ad-hoc survey work monitoring key trends in the market. You will also provide statistics in response to queries from the media and other external stakeholders. Key duties will include:


• Administration and management of regular member surveys
• Data entry and analysis of large amounts of data and information
• Management of statistical databases and electronic filing systems
• Assisting with the development of BBPA publications, guidance and consultation responses
• Preparing meeting papers, briefing notes and minute taking
• Maintaining and updating relevant pages on BBPA’s website
• Building relations and key contacts within member companies and dealing with other external queries


Working in a very busy department, you will need to be a team player, highly numerate, efficient, with initiative and a positive “can do” attitude. The post would ideally suit a graduate with at least two years commercial experience and with a degree containing a strong statistical element. Excellent IT skills and an attention to detail are an absolute must, as is lots of enthusiasm and a sense of humour. Good interpersonal and written skills are also vital. An understanding of Government structures and an interest in the brewing and pub sector would also be helpful.


The salary will be dependent on skills and experience but is likely to be in the region of £30,000 plus benefits including pension, health insurance and subsidised gym membership. Reporting to: Policy Director


Overall purpose of the job:

• To provide statistical analysis and support to the Policy Director and the Department in delivering the work programme of the Association advising on the best use of statistical tools and techniques.
• To provide regular and timely analysis of industry trends to member companiesplusad-hoc analysis to underpin the representational work of the Association
• To assist in policy development on brewing and pub issues and in producing guidance and briefings for members.


Responsibilities:

• Obtain and maintain data, statistics and other information to support policy development and technical guidance to members
• Manage and deliver within the required deadline the regular and ad hoc surveys of the Association’s members
• Provide regular insight and analysis to member companies, including reports on trends in the UK beer market
• Participate in preparation of trade association papers, briefings and submissions to Government and other relevant bodies
• Effect good working relationships with all Departments within the Association and provide updates on trends and market analysis for the Digest and other communications activity.
• Establish and maintain good working relationships with the contacts in member companies who are responsible for providing data and statistics
• Produce the Association’s annual Statistical Handbook
• Respond to statistical queries from members and external parties
• Act as secretary for relevant industry committees, preparing reports, agendas and minutes as appropriate
• Assist with administrative tasks of the department.
• Attend meetings with Government departments, trade liaison groups, external advisors and other bodies as required
• Keep abreast of developments within the industry and relevant to the industry
• Apply the highest Health and Safety standards in all work done, adhering to the Association’s Health and Safety Policy
• Be willing to undertake any other duties in your department or in any other department in the Association on occasions when such duties are necessary to maintain efficient operation of the Association’s business


Skills required:

• Advanced statistical and spreadsheet skills
• Very high degree of numeracy and analytical skills
• Research skills
• Report writing and presentational experience
• IT literate with a good working knowledge of MS Word, Excel (especially), Powerpoint, Outlook and confident user of the Internet
• Strong interpersonal and communications skills
• Highly literate – able to present well both orally and in writing
• Ability to take the initiative
• Team player
• Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with members and external stakeholders
