Launched in 2010 by PRS for Music (an organisation that represents 100,000 songwriters and composers), Music Makeover is now in its fifth year. This year’s competition gives two lucky pubs the chance to win £10,000 worth of music equipment each and invaluable guidance from live music experts.

The deadline for 2015 entries has now closed.

The winning pubs will also be given a consultation with live music experts offering support and guidance when launching their new offers.

On the judging panel will be PRS for Music's Commercial Director, Paul Clements, Neil Williams, BBPA’s Head of Media and Musicians’ Union Assistant General Secretary, Horace Trubridge. Music Makeover is also endorsed by artists including Status Quo, Alt-J, Sandi Thom, Chvrches, Wolf Alice, The Wytches and Erland and the Carnival.

Research undertaken by PRS for Music found that there is significant sales uplift for music venues compared to non-music venues. On average, pubs and venues that provide live music can take up to £306 more per day on wet sales, increasing to £667 per venue per day over the weekend.

Previous winner, Shaun Jackson of the Railway Inn, Oakham, is calling on pub owners to enter Music Makeover 2015 and said: "We had trialled a few live music nights because of my passion for live music and knowledge that live music nights can significantly boost revenues for pubs. It’s a difficult time for pubs and we need to differentiate ourselves. Not only did I get new music equipment, I also had guidance from professionals on how to promote, how to work the new equipment and generally make my music nights a success.”

PRS for Music’s Commercial Director, Paul Clements commented: "Pubs across the UK continually need to innovate and drive footfall with engaging offerings. Live music is a great way in which pubs can attract and retain new audiences. They are crucial in maintaining and developing the UK music scene, whilst providing a stage for the bands of tomorrow to showcase their talents. Music Makeover 2015 offers landlords the opportunity to upgrade their existing offering and position live music as a central part of their future success."

British folk-rockers, Erland and the Carnival remarked: “The UK’s live music circuit is vital. All bands have to go through it - they all play the little venues. As Erland and the Carnival we’ve played tiny little gigs in Glasgow right up to the Southbank in London, and each of those shows are important. You really earn your spurs through live shows and despite all the gigs we’ve done, I’m still learning what it is to be a front man in a band in these venues.”

Previous winners include The Royal Oak in Somerset, The Market Inn in Kent and The Burnaby Arms in Bedford and The Railway Inn in Oakham.
